Liposuction

Liposuction is the technique that helps sculpt the body by removing fat from different areas. Depending on the amount of fat removed the effect can be subtle or dramatic. The abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks, and breasts are all suitable areas for liposuction.

Liposuction has been around since the 1980's. The concept is simple but has been refined over the years to allow a safe and more precise removal of fat. Liposuction is not a weight loss technique and some patients are poor candidates due to loss of skin elasticity but for most people liposuction as a good technique to reshape certain areas of the body.

The procedure is usually done under general anesthesia for comfort although it is possible to do under sedation only. I don't recommend it though. Fluid is injected into the areas that are planned for liposuction. The fluid contains a dilute anesthetic and also contains some epinephrine (adrenaline). This causes the blood vessels to constrict so blood loss is kept to a minimum. A hollow tube called a cannula is then inserted and suction applied. The fat is then removed in a controlled manner.

After surgery recovery is quick and most people are able to return to work after a few days off. A compression garment will need to worn until most of the swelling is gone.
