Breast Reduction

A breast reduction (or reduction mammaplasty) is a procedure designed to reduce the size of the breasts. There are different reasons for considering a breast reduction. Sometimes the heavy weight of the breasts cause back pain and a permanent grooving of the bra straps. Sometimes the size of the breasts limit physical activity and participation in certain sports. Other times the folded breast tissue can cause a chronic irritation or even infection that no amount of powder or topical medicine can help. Over the years a number of different techniques have been developed to deal with the various problems related to larger breasts. During your consultation Dr. Rosenthal will discuss these with you and together you can select the procedure that will give your desired result.

Insurance vs. Self Pay

Some insurance companies will cover the cost of the breast reduction. There are very specific requirements for each company and they aren't all the same. Some insurance companies do not cover breast reductions at all. In general though, at least one of the following symptoms are necessary:

  • Chronic back or neck pain refractory to therapy or chiropractic care
  • Grooving in the clavicles caused by constant pressure of the bra straps
  • Intractable rashes under the breasts that are resistant to treatment with prescription medications

In addition, there are requirements for how much tissue must be removed. Photographs and documentation from your primary care physician must be submitted. Contact the office for a consultation so we can discuss if your breast reduction can be covered by insurance. And if you are not a candidate for insurance coverage then we can proceed like any cosmetic surgery.
